“If you build it, they will come.”
It’s a famous quote and one that far to many business owners think is accurate. After watching local businesses come and go while I’m convinced that this thought is one of the most dangerous for new entrepreneurs.
Just because you set up shop, print business cards, setup a website, and make a Facebook page DOES NOT mean you’re going to get customers. No one is magically walking out of a corn field to buy your product or service. You must have a clear marketing plan that helps potential customers see you as a solution to a problem they have.
Many entrepreneurs started out as someone who loved a product or service and worked for someone else. They decided to set out on their own and open their own business. This is discussed in the classic book The E-Myth: Revisited by Michael Gerber which is a must read for all business owners. Because most business owners start out this way they don’t have the marketing background that is essential to bring in customers and make sales.
Small businesses are the lifeblood of the American economy but it’s a risky endeavor. If you want to make sure your business succeeds you need to put time and money into your marketing efforts. The internet has made it more affordable than ever to market effectively but also more confusing. You used to be able to just call the local newspaper and that was all you could do.
